Despite reading HP as a kid and knowing general fandom ongoings, I never got into HP fic. I was super hardcore into other fandoms (I’m currently trying to hunt down an unfinished ATLA fanfic from when I was like 14 oops), but skipped HP fandom stuff.
But when I tell you I absolutely plowed through Manacled at a breakneck speed after you wrote about it the first time…..my god. There were so many times when I had to look up from my phone and glance around the room like “are y’all seeing this?” And of course I was alone so no, no one was seeing this. But still!! No idea how the author will be able to file the serial numbers off this one. There was a popular Doctor Who RPF that got pulled from AO3 years ago because the author was going to try and rewrite it to get published and it's been radio silence ever since. Apart from a few fics making it big and striking gold offline, I'm just never convinced that changing a few things here or there is the foolproof method publishers (and authors) think it is. I feel like you can kind of always still catch the scent of the original fic/fandom hidden away in there.
Like a lot of others, I flew through Manacled but was also sped along because my friends and I did a sort of “book club” with it so we kept encouraging each other to read faster so we could discuss certain plot points in our group chat. I enjoyed it but didn’t have that absolute gut wrenching cry after finishing like apparently everyone on TikTok. But like you all said, I have no idea how this is going to get published when you take out the magical HP universe element. There’s so much background information that we as readers of the series have built in, how does that get woven in to the story for people not familiar?
Also SUPER interesting to see all of the youth sharing their fanfic recs on TikTok! Like yes I am taking notes and bookmarking but I’m doing that privately. My fic habits stay private except with a select few who are also reading some of the same unhinged fic that I am, and I’m especially keeping my open tabs on lock since I’ve delved into, ahem, RPF…
